Toys for Tots is a charitable project of the Thunder Bay Professional Firefighters Association. The mission of Toys for Tots is to ensure that children living in poverty in our community will receive a gift on Christmas Day. This unique and successful initiative on the part of local firefighters is more than 50 years old, and represents a volunteer effort of hundreds of off-duty man hours.
Beginning mid- November, off-duty firefighters will staff a “toy” fire station in the Food Court of Intercity Shopping Centre. Cash donations can be presented there until mid- December.
The Firefighters’ Toys for Tots Committee operates under the umbrella of the Christmas Cheer Fund which is a registered charity. All funds donated are held in trust for Christmas Cheer. Tax receipts are issued.
In 2013, Toys for Tots raised $158,750, and since 1973 the total is more than $2 million.
Once again this year, local Tim Hortons restaurants will support Toys for Tots with their SMILE Cookie campaign. This generous effort raised $47,880 in 2014.
TD Canada Trust is the financial underwriter of Toys for Tots. In 2010, their $2,500 gift will subsidize the administrative costs of Toys for Tots, helping to ensure that donations from the public will be used to buy gifts for the children. Local TD branches will also accept donations to Toys for Tots
The age of children receiving gifts ranges from infant to 16 years. Adolescent children might receive presents of clothing or other necessities.
When possible, toys are purchased through local suppliers. Toys are selected to be age appropriate, durable, have lasting play value, and require minimum parental input (e.g., batteries, assembly, accessories, etc.)
A very special thank you to MGM Electric. Last year this company and its employees, customers, and suppliers, raised more than $10,000 for a total of over $100,000 since 1997.
